Beyond Argument
"What a great book. I'm already inspired."

"It's elegant, useful and fun."

"...an excellent book. The articles make the reader think, even if he doesn't agree with everything in them -- which is, after all, the mark of a good editorial."

That's what readers are saying about Beyond Argument.

BIOGRAPHY

I practically grew up in the newspaper business, working part-time in high school and college, and then full-time for many years, at The Chattanooga Times, the first newspaper of Adolph Ochs. Mr. Ochs left The Chattanooga Times in the family trust, and we were the professional beneficiaries of our big sister paper, The New York Times. John Popham, the NYT's legendary Southern correspondent during the turbulent Civil Rights era of the 1960s, was our long-time managing editor. He enforced high standards for reporting, writing and watering-hole tales, and infused a love of newspapering in all reporters who rotated, as I did, though the various beats that answered to the city desk.

NCEW has served me well as an extension of that kind of newspaper legacy. I've been able to attend every annual NCEW conference since I became an editorial writer in 1988, and I've benefited immensely from the camaraderie, professional development, critiques and friendships. Since I became editor of our page in 1999, NCEW's members have been particularly valuable to me as my daily mentors, support group and guiding stars. The occasional state and regional awards our editorials have won reflect NCEW's contributions and focus on our craft and mission.

I've been lucky to serve on several NCEW committees, and the NCEW and Foundation boards. I always feel I receive far more from NCEW than I contribute. It's that kind of return that has kept me connected and nourished in my job.
