Clendinen Professorship

Guest Faculty Position. The University of South Florida School of Mass Communications invites applications for the position of James A. Clendinen Professor in Editorial and Critical Writing. Clendinen served the Tampa Tribune for 50 years, including 25 years as editor and more than a decade as editorial board chairman. He was NCEW president in 1966. After Clendinen died in 1991, his employer, friends and family endowed a professorship in his name. The NCEW Foundation also supports the professorship. Responsibilities. The Clendinen Professor teaches "Critical Writing: Editorials, Reviews, Columns" to selected USF undergraduates three times a week from the third week in January to the third week in February. The course description is: "Interpretive and opinion writing for the mass media. Analysis and discussion of current events as a basis for critical thinking and editorial writing; evaluation of editorial pages of leading newspapers. Study of journalistic techniques involved in personal columns." The Clendinen Professor also makes a presentation at the university on a topic related to editorial and commentary writing.

Minimum Qualifications and Compensation. The position requires an appropriate bachelor's degree at the minimum, significant professional experience in editorial writing and evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching. The Clendinen Professor's stipend is $5,000. In addition, the Clendinen Professor will receive reimbursement for round-trip transportation to Tampa and for a car rental while in Florida and will be provided free housing at a nearby hotel for the duration of the course. A university office, a computer, and secretarial and research support also are provided.

The University and the School. USF is one of the nation's top 63 public research universities as designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. USF received more that $310 million in research contracts and grants last year, and it is ranked by the National Science Foundation as one of the nation's two fastest growing universities in terms of federal research and development expenditures. Founded in 1956, USF is one of the largest metropolitan universities in the United States, serving more than 44,000 students in 13 colleges and schools on four campuses. USF offers degree programs in 87 undergraduate disciplines, more than 90 master's and specialist's programs, and 36 doctoral programs, plus the M.D. The faculty numbers more than 2,000 members. The School of Mass Communications, housed in a $10 million building completed in 1992 and located in the 12th largest television market in the nation, is certified by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. The school offers a bachelor of arts degree in mass communications through four undergraduate sequences--advertising, journalism, public relations and telecommunications. Undergraduate enrollment, which is limited to students who meet a GPA standard and pass a qualifying examination, is approximately 1,400 majors. A master of arts degree in mass communications can be earned in one of three studies tracks-media studies, multimedia journalism, and strategic communication management. Approximately 50 students are enrolled in graduate study. There are 20 full-time faculty members with a broad range of professional and scholarly credentials.
