At the bottom of news stories posted to the Web, we allow readers to comment on the stories.
On May 1 and 2, about 15 people commented on a story about school choice in St. Lucie County. On May 9, a Monday, we ran the best of those comments (show on the attached op-ed page) and referred people back to the original story. We packaged it with a local cartoon on the issue. It was the first time we ran comments left on our Web site in the paper.
That Monday -- eight days after the original story -- the original story was the 10th most-viewed page on our site. We attribute this to the Monday op-ed package and the contentiousness of the issue.
We're going to start, at least weekly, running the best comments from the Web in the paper. We'll likely zone them, as we did with the May 9 one (which ran in only two of our four zones).
