Overview:

One of the thrills of journalism is having a front row seat to history.  Indeed, any journalist worth his/her salt wants to be near the front lines when something important is happening, be it the fire down the street or a singular event on the other side of the world.
That inquisitive journalistic spirit should be enough to prompt long-time members of NCEW, along with new comers to our venerable organization to attend this year’s pivotal convention in Salt Lake City.
The meetings September 23-26 at the Hilton Hotel, of course, will involve experts in discussions of some of the most vital national issues of the day.   It will be enlightening to hear what former Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt has to say about health care reform, and how a panel of experts approaches the nation’s energy revolution.  Beyond that, though, are critical questions about the future of news industry itself, including the craft of editorializing and opinion writing.  No one will want to miss hearing the studied insights of MediaNews Group CEO (and AP Board Chairman) Dean Singleton, as well as Pulitzer winning reporter/columnist/editor John Hughes.   For those frustrated by budget cuts, trimmed staffs and forced furloughs, the hour spent with renowned business consultant Dr. Roger Hendrix will be worth the cost of attending the four-day convention.
Beyond all of that, though, is the critical discussion that will be held about the future of NCEW itself.  Like all of us in this electronic world of blogs and tweets and ubiquitous offerings of opinion, NCEW must adapt in order to survive.  Each member’s input will be a vital part of the discussion.
All of this will be taking place in one of America’s most stunning settings - a progressive mid-sized city that is recognized for its accessibility, friendliness and beauty.   In addition to an opening event that will take your breath away, a spouse/guest tour to the resort town of Park City, and nightlife and dining opportunities that will surprise you, we’ll be treated to our very own concert by the famed Mormon Tabernacle Choir.  A front row seat is awaiting those who attend.
